RESEARCH NOTE: Constructing the Value System



One cannot underestimate the role of value systems in the life of an entrepreneur, enterprise or organization. It is important for an entrepreneur or CEO to know the constructs of the value system and appropriately shape the business idea, and position the enterprise to extract optimal profits.

So, how does one construct a value system suitable to an enterprise? Here are a few pointers:

1. Understanding the Organization Value Curve
The Organisation Value Curve is a graphic depiction of the cluster of values that an organization offers to its market segment. A combination of ‘order winning’ and ‘market entry’ parameters constitute the Value Curve of the organization.

2. Understanding the Industry Value Curve
An organization would ideally seek a position which can maximize its profit potential, but the final fit is determined by its competences and business objectives. Moving up the industry Value Curve means getting a higher margin for the value offered.

3. Understanding Network Structures
An understanding of industry structures will help in deciding the most effective structure for the purpose. It should be noted by the entrepreneur that knowledge of network structures will not have a great influence on the Business Decision but indicates Strategies for Operations.

4. Constructing the Value System
Construction of a Value System can be understood by questions like the ultimate consumer segment to be served, the Value Curve is to be adopted, position the organization in the Value System, relationships structure and the method of delivering value.

Institutions employ people in order to pursue their mission and vision. The need to consistently achieve goals in a dynamic environment necessitates their continual growth and development. This statement rings more true as one ascends the hierarchy of accountability, particularly at the executive levels.

The job role of the Group Business Head, Supervisory Council member, or the Director on the Board at the sixth stratum of the organization is a nurturing one. The mandate is to facilitate the successful conduct of the business. This includes helping the Chief Executive Officer that actually runs the business organization to succeed in his or her role. Directors cede all direct, hands-on involvement in the running of the enterprise to the CEO and the executive team.

Mentorship is a supportive relationship between a caring individual who is ready to share knowledge, experience, and wisdom with another who is willing to benefit from this exchange. This accountability rests at the penultimate rung of the organization’s hierarchy of accountability.
